A farewell symposium will be organised in honour of Prof.Dr. Jan Reedijk on the occasion of his retirement from the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at Leiden University that he has occupied since November 1, 1979.
The morning session of the symposium comprises contributions from former group members and ends with a reunion lunch for the attendees. The formal symposium in the afternoon comprises two contributions of internationally renowned speakers. Jan Reedijk will then conclude the symposium with his farewell lecture.
After the symposium, all attendees will have the opportunity to drink a toast to Jan Reedijk during the reception in the central hall of the Gorlaeus laboratories.

Programme Symposium
(print version)

Pretargeted radioimmunotherapy and -imaging enables significant increases in tumor/non-tumor ratios of radioactivity. After injection and tumor localization of a large and slow antibody, a small and fast probe consisting of a radiometal complex conjugated to an antibody-binding moiety is injected and quickly binds the antibody. To address the drawbacks of the currently used biological antibody-probe binding systems we designed a novel pretargeting methodology based on bio-orthogonal chemical ligation reactions. This methodology allows selective conjugation of a chemically modified antibody with a radiometal complex functionalized with the complementary chemical group.Various poly-beta-Diketophenols have been prepared and used as rigid ligands for the assembly of a rich category of metallosupramolecular assemblies. The structure of these organic donors determines the metal topologies of the final coordination complexes, which include arrays with fundamental interest, such as metallic nanowires or pairs of weakly interacting clusters.Natural products containing phosphorus-carbon bonds have found widespread use in medicine and agriculture. One such compound is phosphinothricin (PT). Recent genetic and biochemical studies showed that during PT biosynthesis 2-hydroxyethylphosphonate (HEP) is converted to hydroxymethylphosphonate (HMP) by a non-heme iron-dependent enzyme. Mechanistic studies into this unprecedented C-C bond cleavage reaction will be presented.Previous work has shown that {Cr7Ni} heterometallic rings have many of the properties required for individual qubits - isolated S = 1/2 ground states and sufficiently long coherence times. Here we report studies where the rings are linked into supramolecular arrays including rotaxanes, dimers, trimers, tetramers and polymers. The role of metal complexes as therapeutic and diagnostic agents is burgeoning due to interest from many academic and industrial concerns; the current value of medicinal inorganic chemistry is in excess of 109 $. Cis-platin, for example, is the archetypal inorganic drug containing as it does, no atoms of carbon. Principles in the design of metal compounds as drugs will be discussed in detail with examples from work in the speaker's research laboratories presented to illustrate these principles. A number of vanadium compounds have insulin-enhancing properties, most notably when administered orally (a route via which insulin is not active). Gastrointestinal absorption of vanadium is usually poor and depends on the chemical nature, solubility, and speciation of the specific metal ion complex. We have discovered an orally effective therapeutic agent that is a potent insulin-enhancing drug and is now in phase 2 clinical trials. Also presented will be new carbohydrate conjugates for diagnosis and therapy.
